The United States Department of Transportation announced last Wednesday that it rescinded a rule that required airlines to accommodate animals considered “emotional support” or “emotional support” on flights. The new update to the air transport rules eliminates the categorization of support or support animals as service animals.
With the new rule, airlines are not required to allow support animals or emotional support in the cabin. However, it is very important that travelers contact their airline prior to their flight if they plan to bring a carrier animal with them. The airlines will have the final decision at their discretion.

There are substantial differences in the categorization of a service animal versus a support or emotional support animal. A service animal is trained to work or perform a task for the benefit of a person with a disability. Emotional support and psychiatric service animals function therapeutically.
As of 2021, the airlines will have their discretion if they will allow emotional support animals. Over the past few years, airlines had raised their voices to what they considered a rule that lent itself to abusive practices by many travelers. For example, several cases of people carrying animals such as peacocks, horses, monkeys or piglets were reported by the media over the past years.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guarantees people with a certified disability that they will be able to travel with their service animals. With the new measure, emotional support animals are no longer recognized as service animals.
